Vancouver Beekeeping Courses

Become a beekeeper
        There are a number of organizations offering beekeeping courses in the Vancouver area.  This is a list of some of the Schools : Urban Bee Supplies (Delta);  Honeybee Centre (Surrey); locally Homestead Junction at 649 E. Hastings; Dancing Bee Apiary in Aldergrove; Campbell's Gold in Abbotsford ; Capilano University in North Vancouver; Environmental Youth Alliance in Vancouver; and Langara College in Vancouver.   We offer a number of free introduction to beekeeping classes in May-June at Cottonwood Garden in Vancouver.  While hands on beekeeping experience is a must there are a few free online beekeeping courses available that are very useful.  Ohio State University Bee Lab has created a free "Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping Course" based on Dr. Reed Johnson's for-credit OSU Beekeeping Course.  The course consists of video lectures, handouts and readings that can be accessed through iTunes.  They need volunteers to review the course and offer suggestions.  To be a volunteer to review this course fill out this simple registration to receive a link to the course.  Another good, free online beekeeping course, "Honey Bees and Colony Strength Evaluation"  (you may log in as a guest) is presented by the University of California.  This course is offered in modules covering topics from very basic beginner beekeeping information to more advanced colony strength evaluation so that the student can choose the module suited to their skill level.  Below is a list of some of the local beekeeping courses available.


August 20 - Introductory Beekeeping Classes
3 hour classroom - 3 hour beeyard instruction.  Basic Hive Management. Honey Harvesting , IPM.

Over Wintering , Basic Bee Biology , Swarm Control.  $ 150.00 per person, plus GST

November 4 - Wintering Your Hives
There are a few tricks to getting your bees to make it through the winter, And it all begins in the summer. This class is set up so that you receive emails from mid summer through to the fall, telling you what you need to do every step of the way.  When you come to class you’ll have done everything up to that point, which dramatically increases your chances of winter survival.  In class we’ll review why I made you take those steps, and you’ll learn how to prepare your hives for our winter climate, or whatever climate your raising bees in.  This is a hands on class, and you will be wrapping hives in our yard.  We’ve had amazing success with over wintering our bees, these amazing tricks will be sure to improve your chances of winter survival.  Only 20 students per session.

January - Commercial Beekeeping Program
Commercial Beekeeping is a full-time, 11-month program. Through classes, hands-on training, and work experience, you’ll have the skills to start and manage an operation of up to 300 colonies. This career training is a non-university credit program. BC, along with many other parts of the world are facing a shortage of beekeepers. Pollination services are currently in high demand—especially in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley region—and the price of honey is at an all-time high. Students who complete the program will be prepared to enter a diverse and in-demand industry.
